How To Use the Wind Analysis Power Curve

Introduction

The power curve algorithm used by Farsight® follows the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61400-12-1 standard to model and analyze a wind turbine's performance under different conditions.

Steps

Go to: Farsight® > Wind Analysis > Wind Analysis

  1. Click on the Compare assets dropdown and pick which assets to visualize and compare

  2. Click on the Reference Power Curves dropdown and pick between different power curve references, such as the OEM power curve. Toggle On and Off the desired ones. You can import new power curves, either in custom or international format, by clicking on Manage Power Curves

  3. Click on the 3 dots icon to either expand the power curve graph, export its data, or open the Power Curve Settings

  4. Click the magnifying glass icon to start the zoom-in process, and select the area of the table to zoom in. Click the reset icon next to it to reset the zoom effect. You can also zoom in using your mouse scroll wheel while hovering over the graph

  5. You can see the table legend here, showcasing the different data points being plotted

Power Curve Settings

You can configure reference air density, bin size, and more for accurate insights.

  1. Click on the 3 dots icon

  2. Click on Power Curve Settings. A pop-up window will appear with the settings.

Input

Definition

Reference Air Density (kg/m3)

Toggle between the IEC Standard Air Density (1.225) and your own custom input.

Bin Size (m/s)

According to the IEC Standard, bin size is 0.5 m/s for creating histograms and analyzing power curves, but you can specify your own custom input.

Altitude (m)

Input the altitude of the power plant. This influences the air density used to normalize wind speed samples.

Min. Work Hours

The minimum number of valid samples in time to validate the resulting power curve. Normally, each valid wind speed sample represents 10 minutes of valid data.

Min. Sample per Bin

Minimum number of valid samples contained within a bin to consider it valid to calculate the respective power curve point. According to the IEC Standard, the minimum time of valid data that should be stored in a bin is 30 minutes, hence 3 samples.
